Ladies and gentlemen...welcome...nothing here....nothing there....nothing up my sleeve..........Hocus pocus: FOCUS! Yes, that’s right prog friends there is a new Focus in town…and a brilliant one at that!! Grandfather Thijs Van Leer attended some event, where cover band: Hocus Pocus paid homage to the Dutch prog masters. He was so thrilled that he asked them, to join him in order for all of us to enjoy these guys. So here it is....and a wonderful thing it is!
Appropriately named Focus, they work wonders I think but (Yes, there is a but!) guitarist Jan is no Akkerman (well, ho is?) as I miss his (Akkerman’s) fluid and brilliant fast runs. That said, I think Jan fills his musical shoes, especially in the slower songs/themes. Thijs is of course (as ever) fabulous on keys and his flute playing better than ever. Oh, by the way, there is yodeling (why?) on a few tracks but hey, it does not kill the overall fine tunes that fill this album. A special mention to tracks: "Tamara´s move", "Fretless love", "Focus 8" and " Blizu tebe", whatever that means? Anyhow this is a rare welcome as nothing seems to indicate that the "old" original guys are anywhere close to reunion. I love this album so 5 stars from me. Well, what did you expect? I’m an old geezer!
