Review
Rock music whatever the genera should, at its best, be enjoyable and 'fun'. If then, entwined within the mix, a real sense of excitement can be incorporated together with the capacity to extend the music beyond the realms of the plain and ordinary what you then have is something worth the time to stop at listen and enjoy. Such a case is the Chicago home bred band 'Styx' who produced a multitude of great albums during the seventies and early eighties. On review here is the excellent BGO remastering of their first official live album entitled "Caught in the Act" which was recorded in 1984 at the 'Saenger Theatre in New Orleans. This live album was actually a recording contract obligation before the band could officially break up and in which one new song, "Music Time", was incorporated for release as a single but not included on this double cd.

Despite the fact that this live recording was a contractual requirement it absolutely lacks nothing in terms of commitment, energy and splendour. It is in fact a brilliant representation of everything the band stood for in terms of good well composed exciting rock music. Most bands struggle to maintain a consistently high standard of compositional output but in the case of 'Styx' they were a proverbial music machine creating a continuous stream of brilliant songs both in terms of the slower ballads and more up-tempo heavier rock infused tunes. Certainly a factor towards this achievement was that all of the guys were accomplished musicians and besides the two main lead vocalists (Dennis De Young and Tommy Shaw) all the others could sing and harmonise well. Besides that and as demonstrated here on this live album the music extended beyond the normal basic rock format incorporating subtle time changes and many incursions into progressive rock territory. This live recording is rich too in audience participation and you can actually sense the excitement levels rise as the band work the crowd to a state of utter euphoria. My only slight criticism is that a couple of tracks from the original recordings, (maybe contractual?), have been deleted which could easily have been included over the two CDs.

Summary: A nice trip down memory lane listening to these classic rock tunes from Styx...

Artwork: As usual a superb package from BGO with nice booklet, information and photos.
