One of my favorite prog bands (well, there are many) but in this case Pallas, has a brand new album out called The Dreams of Men. 4 years after the brilliant The Cross & the Crucible. And I must admit the first listenings left me disappointed but as a true reviewer and a prog listener you have to listen to new albums at least 3-4 times. So eventually the music grew on me!! As the title would suggest these songs are about men with dreams! The music here is varied both in context and performance. Pallas are supreme musicians and their compositions are brilliant! This album is filled to the brim with complex arrangements, sometimes with very heavy themes which suddenly slides into (almost silent) parts of sheer beauty laden ballads.
Yes, dear prog fan, this album had it all: powerful thundering themes, folk inspired softness, soothing melodies, superb guitar soli and add to that some very well sung vocals (listen to the beautiful angel-like female vocals on the last track "The Last Angel".) This Pallas album could very well prove to be their grand epic album! And if you are acquainted with Pallas, you´ll know that this is one mother of an album! I therefore urge you to go buy this magnificent album, listen to it more than once and you will be rewarded!
Conclusion: This is as good as they come prog albums. My favorite tracks are "Bringer of Dreams", "Ghostdancers"(with the wonderful intro of trad. violin), "Invincible" & the magical "The Last Angel" a track that slowly creeps up on you, slowly building to a very wonderful mid-theme with fine guitars & keys leading into some very beautiful goose-bump inducing female vocals...great stuff!! I’ll tell you right now, this track has to be played LOUD!
So enjoy prog fan...this is as good as it gets! Pallas are supreme!
