Imagine a lot of Beatles influence, then add some great seventies vocal styled American power rock and a pinch of the odd chromatic harmonica style of Stevie Wonder and jazz oracle Toots Thielmanns. Now put your amazed jaw drop, back in place. Now, what am I rambling about? Well I’m just trying to set things right, because these guys, who under the name Jellyfish made a remarkable debut album in 1990...and nobody seemed to notice!
Bellybutton is the title of this gem. And I promise you a treat of the better, when (and if) you purchase this finely crafted pop/prog band in its prime! This album is absolutely filled to the brim with great songs and wonderful arrangements including all of the above features plus some very jazzy lounge themes. Actually I would go so far as to say that some of the excellent songs herein are ones that even the great Beatles would be proud of!
My favorites are “The man I used to be” or the fine “The king is half undressed”. Even though “Baby´s coming back” takes the price as a superb hit song which should have been on a top ten…well just about anywhere in the (western) world.
But hey, there is not one bad track on this album. So gentlemen: Sturmer, Manning, Faulkner & Manning take a bow...for this is absolutely superb and finely executed pop/prog music and yes, it is a masterpiece in the world of art rock. Bonus tracks even has a Wings cover version. Oh great stuff!
So what’s wrong with me? Nothing, I’m just happy to own this gem! Yes I know this is primary a prog site, but I’m so in love with art rock!
