Review content: Mixed artist tribute compilations are always subject to speculation and much argument. More so when such a compilation is centered around a classic progressive rock band like ‘Yes’. In that respect I know that whatever the quality of the instrumentation or how good the interpretation of the music has turned, out there will be many ‘Yes’ fans who will immediately cast a critically downturned thumb movement towards this album. That though would be a real pity, because, contained within the entire array of musical selections recorded here, on this album, are a whole host of excellent and freshly delivered inerpretations of the music selections produced by ‘Yes’ through a range of different artists. A difficult enough task initself but certainly it has worked well with the result that this tribute album is exactly that; a celibrated “thank you” in recognition to such an influential band in the world of progressive rock.
Whilst the order of the music does not relate to any strict time scale of events the resultant programme, however, does in fact seem to cover a wide time span of the total ‘Yes’recorded output.
“Yes” throughout their entire existence, as a band, have truly been at the forefront of the progressive rock movement. Certainly they were an extraordinary musical collective who honed their resultant musical colaborations to ever increasing heights of complexity and finesse. Without doubt a hard act to follow in any given circumstance let alone as musicians involving themselves with contributions to a ‘Yes’ tribute album.
But as a project it has worked well with some fresh ideas being integrated into the arrangements and which in turn provide some nice soundscapes as focal points for the listener. The aspect that I find interesting, about this album, boils down to the actual selection of songs that were utilised. It probably would have been easier for the producer to select, as a majority, more of the well known higher impact tracks but I’m pleased to say that there is a distinct sprinkling of of the more obscure tracks. There is, for example, a “delicious to the extreme” reworking of the song ‘Soon’ by members of ‘Curved Air’
It really is an interesting album involving an array of highly proficient musicians who all bring their own special contributions to the new arrangements of these ‘Yes’ songs. It should be stressed that this album could never be regarded as a replacement for the original ‘Yes’ output. But the excellent quality of the tribute project, as such, is most definetly a great alternative to the original songs and an interesting look at how other musicians have interpretated the magic of ‘Yes’ in all respects.
