Italian Magic

Review
This magical album, which was released in November 2016, is the results of a collaboration between the 1970s fairly obscure and somewhat unknown Italian Progressive Rock Band “CAP” Consorzio Acqua Potabile together with the much more well-known “Alvero Fella” former front man and lead vocalist of the Italian Progressive Rock giants “Jumbo”. Musically this album encompasses all of the trademarks which make Italian progressive rock so motivating and appealing. All in all it is a splendid mixture of elaborate time changes, classical and folk music influences knitted together with moments of harder edge rock and full on melodic charm. For me, I am a total sucker for most things Progressive Rock Italiano, it is, indeed, an Aladdin’s cave full of different delights in every corner. I have to be honest and say that it does take a few, or even more, spins to understand fully what is going on in order to appreciate the eclectic mix of tones and variations in the musical hodge podge of the different musical sequences throughout the eight tracks. The first thing to point out is the time needed to register your brain with the almost manic rough and gruff vocal style of “Alvero Fella”. It is certainly not a singing style of beautiful intonation and melodious charm, but it is a distinctly charismatic and powerful vocal delivery full of authority and interest. More so and despite the almost tongue twisting speedy delivery his vocal projection totally grows on you and you realise it fits perfectly with the music. The arrangement’s throughout are wonderfully elaborate with complex combinations of guitar, keyboard, flute and bass guitar and surprisingly so many different variations of musical styles but all of which are contained within a progressive rock framework. The whole affair of eight tracks leaves you feeling quite breathless and totally satiated as the music flows effortlessly over you with each track bringing multitudes of variation and listening pleasure but it needs to be emphasized that this album needs to be played several times in order to fully be able to engage into the sheer brilliance and uniqueness of this wonderful slice of Italian magic. As a passing note “Black Widow” have done a wonderful job putting this album together and releasing it with such care and attention and it is certainly a wonderful addition to own my private collection.

Summary: A full on slice of magical Italian Progressive Rock with interesting musical arrangements and unique but quality vocals.

Artwork: My version is in Italian but I would suspect that an English version of this very comprehensive beautifully illustrated booklet is available.

All bands/artists and all moozik aficionados, if you have not joined Planet Of Prog on their fb page yet you might want to join them here too. They are unbiased, very honest sharing the music from the greats to the indie starting artists and what I love the most about them, there is no negativity (you'll not find any pompous selfrightous know it all full of know better and how sermons on their reviews) no matter who you are, all their reviews the bands are treated with utmost dignity even if the review is not most favorable, that review will be honest, not pompous and most in awe respectful of the artist's efforts. I love them, love this site. Join if you want to,I like them a lot!
